"The Expert's history with meditative, melodic beats that still draw head nods has precedent, as the producer cited Large Professor, RZA, RJD2, and The Avalanches as influences on his own stylistic approach. But his production on 'The Overview Effect' siphons that all into a more dedicated conceptual environment, not dissimilar to Edan's 2005 psych-rap gem 'Beauty and the Beat.'

Picture some of the baroque-pop greats from The Zombies to Love infused with the kind of propulsive breaks that underpinned peak '90s golden era hip-hop of a soul-jazz bent, and you get the vibe: outwardly trippy and ornate, but meditatively pensive and put together in a way that keeps pulling you into unexpected corners.

You can hear all the decades at once if you listen carefully, a wider expansion of the effect producers got back in the day from flipping David Axelrod's session-player orchestral psychedelia or the wigged-out energy of Curt Boettcher's soft psych productions."
